Artist Statement – Ilze Riekstiņš
I am an Interdisciplinary artist working in digital drawing and painting as well as traditional drawing materials. My work focuses on capturing a gay woman’s perspective on a love of femininity. I create works that speak to feminine subjects, emotions, energy, and experiences from the eyes of a woman who loves women.
My art strives to capture emotions and moments in time, with a focus on the soft and intimate. Color and light serve my use of organic, round shapes and lines to create motion and lead an eye through the work.
I am fascinated with texture, especially within digital mediums. Aiming to capture the process and freedom of traditional painting and drawing techniques through digital programs. I work with varying edge qualities that create softness or contrast, playing with edges on a spectrum. I always aim to capture real moments or emotions while still creating stylistic pieces. Capturing what is real, without realism.
